Banana slug! Are these the escargot of the future smothered in garlic butter? Bigger is better, right? This little creature has some really interesting medicinal traits, check out my answer in the video below...
BC's native Banana Slug is the second largest species in the world and can grow to more than 20 cm. This is a good slug, almost never found in gardens, so be nice to them. In natural habitats, it even acts as a recycler, consuming and breaking down dead and decaying matter. These slugs have 27,000 teeth on a long tooth-covered “tongue”, yikes, and come in a range of colours, from yellow
to brown to black and many are mottled with black spots.
Ps. We're creating a virtual foraging survival trip that includes safe and sustainable methods for harvesting seafood and other wild foods on the BC coast if you want to learn more, check it out below...
Next week, I'm going to create some Pacific Northwest cooking videos, so stay tuned for those. I'm excited for some spring foraging and cooking. Nettles, elderflower, bright green birch leaves, edible wild flowers, maybe a spring foraged salad.
We're all in this together and even small businesses like ours can help out, so we're going to donate $5 from every sale from this newsletter to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.
