Hi , We live by the sea, right? It's easy to forget that in Vancouver for some reason:) So, I love to encourage people to get out there and catch their own seafood for a little summer fishing fun. On May 3rd, the spot prawn fishing season finally opened and will continue on for the next 6-8 weeks into June, so buy yourself a prawn trap and get out there.
SPOT PRAWNING
How to catch some yourself:
You need a boat/kayak/canoe to take your prawn trap out and drop it in enough depth of water (100ft ish). I use the navionics app to figure out the depth of a certain area. The Bait: Carlyle Just Tuna is THE best tinned bait, mix it with Ace of Baits pellets and Prawn scent for good results. Drop the traps in of water with a moderate tidal flow, four hours later pull them up, if your traps don’t fill up in 4 hrs, move
to another spot.
Fun Prawn Fact:
The BC Spot Prawn fishery is very sustainable, yay us. US Spot Prawns may come in earlier but they are not as sustainable as the BC harvest: prawns are smaller and often ‘berried’ (females with eggs attached). The BC season opens later which means the prawns have grown to full size and about to die naturally.
