Did you know that if you cultivate this little plant and place it beneath your pillow you'll dream of your sweetheart? If you have already found love, you only need to get your bridesmaids to bring some to your wedding to ensure 7 years of love (then, you're on your own, there's only so much a plant can do, ladies!).
I know it doesn't look like much of a love potion ingredient, but yarrow packs a medicinal punch. Even better, it's a very common weed that you can easily find growing in meadows and on roadsides all over BC. In the middle ages, it was used in Ireland for love divination. I'm here to tell you about it's many lost secrets;)
All witchcraft and love potions aside, this herb has been used for medicine by Europeans and First Nations peoples for centuries. It was used to treat headaches, stomach ailments, stings, cuts, sores and burns. First Nations used the mashed roots as a local anesthetic. And, in ancient times, common yarrow was used in wartime to stop bleeding. In Greece, it is a symbol of war. I say all this to
highlight that a plant with such a long history of medicinal use doesn't get it with no reason.
Yarrow has proven effective as a medicinal herb and is considered safe by Health Canada for international consumption. Today, it is still used mainly as a tonic and as a cure for stomach ailments.
On the culinary side, spring yarrow leaves are sometimes eaten (cooked or fresh) in salads. The leaves and flowers are used to flavor liqueurs, and were once substituted for hops to flavor beer. It's amazing the amount of local plant knowledge and folklore that is lost to us in 2019. Pass the secrets on and come out with us on a wild plant walk or mushroom foraging experience this fall.

We'll teach you how to fish for Dungeness Crab and will discuss harvesting seaweed, salmon, flounder, sole, sculpin, herring, crab, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, squid, clams, scallops, oysters, mussels, gooseneck barnacles in BC. And after, we'll cook you dinner or lunch on the beach. Bring all your questions about how to harvest from the seashore. 79 pp and we meet at Jericho Pier.
