We're all craving a little comfort to deal with this winters endless home time and cooking is one of those easy escapes to better times. Trapped in my house today, I'm choosing to wrap myself in the warm memories of good food. Food nostalgia is a funny impulse that seems to depend heavily on the dishes that your parents cooked and what era you grew up in.
Sadly, my childhood era wasn't the strongest on the nutrition front. I still crave Kraft dinner, though, I definitely do not crave Chef Boyardee, (mini ravioli, yuk) like I did when I was 10. Can you believe that brand was created by an actual Italian! My strongest food connections are for the food my mom cooked like her pierogi dough (top notch), simple chicken and dumplings and family desserts like a layered shortbread cake with sweet prune filling (Vinaterta). Every
family has it's weird dish that raises eyebrows from outside the clan; milk noodle soup and mandarin marshmallow jelly salad for the Kort's, yup, JELLY SALAD, hahaha. Comfort food creates strong emotional reactions partially because of how they can help to define us as a cultural group or a family unit. Join me to find out why our brains love certain foods, a blog post about our primal and cultural connection to food.
