The Giant Pacific Chiton is also called a gumboot chiton and is indeed edible, so if you haven't yet there's hope. Westcoast First Nations would eat them as a massive protein source in winter. They move real slow so it's easy fishing, the only thing you have to be cautious of is red tide or other toxic
algae blooms that would render them inedible. Gumboot chitons can be eaten raw (skinned and gutted) or traditionally cooked in steam pits.
If you have ever tried one, I'd love to hear from you. I'm currently researching and writing a coastal foraging cookbook which will include some of my favourite recipes with wild coastal ingredients. I've been cooking and harvesting in the Gulf Islands this summer and have found some new, weird and wonderful treats to eat. Any suggestions for neat wild ingredients that you can find on the
coast? Feel free to drop me a line.
Join us for a sea foraging tour to try out some of the food that I've been experimenting with for the cookbook, there are a few tickets left, info below.
