Urchin roe is a creamy, salty delicacy that is
easy to hand harvest in BC. Sometimes, you don't even have to get in the water! You can harvest urchin all year round. So to get started check tidal charts online for a low tide under .3m is good. In winter, the lowest tides are frequently at night, so bring a flashlight, neoprene gloves, kitchen tongs, and a tidal water fishing license for some fun and adventurous harvesting. I'll be serving my hand harvested uni butter(recipe here) for lunch at our winter sea foraging class this weekend and Feb 7th. To learn more from me about how to harvest seafood in winter, come out on a sea foraging class starting this weekend. A few dates are already sold out, check the details below...
Foraging tip: psst... Saturday at 11pm you have the lowest tide in a while at 0.4m, a
really fun time to do some headlamp guided tide pooling for you night owls!
