How to Forage For Mushrooms in Vancouver (Begins Sept 30)

Published: Fri, 09/28/12

How many times have you spotted a pretty little mushroom in the woods, but just passed it by because you had no way of knowing if it was edible?

Too many you say? Well, Wild Mushroom Tours begin Sept 30.

What if next time you went for a walk in the woods you emerged victoriously with a big silly grin on your face, armfuls of chantrelles, porcinis, oyster mushrooms and spicy wild greens for dinner.

Here's a quote from The Province this week. They wrote an article about our foraging tours..

"The renewed interest in what was formerly deemed inedible is due to the ever-increasing sophistication of the North American palate. Dude, pass the dandelions... Foraged foods, formerly known as "weeds" to the great unwashed, are making a comeback on the tables of the coolest restaurants in the world."

Why not feature foraged mushrooms on your table too? You just need a little instruction in the beginning to avoid the psychedelic ones... or not... we won't judge.

Anyway... Our Wild Mushroom Tours run on Sundays until mid November, last 2 hours, cost $39 and include a lunch featuring wild foods and goodies from the farmers market.

We won't be harvesting during the tour, so we can continue using "our spot", but rest assured you'll be well fed.

You will learn:

  • Wild Mushroom identification
  • Wild Greens identification
  • Wild Berry Identification
  • Foraging etiquette and sustainable harvesting
  • Recipes for wild foods
  • Meet others who may be interested in meeting for future foraging expeditions

PS

Mushroom season is short. The first year I wanted to learn about picking mushrooms, I let myself get busy with work. Before I knew it, the season had passed me by and I had to wait another year! Learn from my mistake, don't miss out.

Sept 30, has already nearly sold out.
