Why are you swirling your wine?

The physics of swirling wine
The physics behind the ritual.
And how to do it without slopping it everywhere and looking like a duck at the White House.

When you swirl wine, you are introducing oxygen into it.  In physics, they call this 'orbital shaking', through the waves generated at the inner edge of the glass  the phenolic compounds  (smelly particles) are released and travel to your nose increasing the aroma or bouquet of the wine. Quick tip for spill free swirling; simply keep the glass on the table as you rotate the glass.
