German Christmas Gluhwein Recipe
An easy recipe for piping hot spiced wine to celebrate the holiday's with. Prep
Time: 45 minutes. Servings: 6.
Ingredients:
- 1 bottle red wine (merlot, malbec, something fruity)
- 3/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 orange
juiced
- 3 pieces orange peel (1cm x 5 cm pieces)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 10 whole cloves
- 1/8 tsp cardamon (not traditional, optional)
- 1/2 cup dark rum or bourbon (the bourbon is not
traditional)
Preparation: - In a medium size saucepan, combine the water, sugar, spices. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly, then reduce heat and continue to simmer.
- Add orange peel and juice. Cook until the mixture starts to thicken like syrup.
- Pour in
the wine and rum (if using) and stir, heating gradually until steaming. DO NOT BOIL. Remove orange peel/spices and serve in pretty little tea cups if you have them.
